Cpl/C M.Belisle

Salut,

Vincent,

Amitiés

It was good to see the truth come out. Although I did not know Daniel, I knew many like him. I was in Croatia during '92 and Bosnia during '94, the latter as CivPol Station Commander in Gorazde. I did meet many of the Forces personnel at Visoko. My respect for the Canadian Military grew by leaps & bounds, there is no doubt that they are second to none as a military force.

Captain Daniel Scuka, SSM, CD, (Ret'd),
from Tokyo, Japan,
connecting via yok-ppp216.iac.itjit.ne.jp,

was here on Sunday April 13 05:01:11 GMT 1997,
leaving the message:
I served as the Officer-in-Charge (OiC) of the Recruit Craftsman Training
Faculty at the CF School of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers,
CFB Borden, Ont., during the period Jan 87 to Aug 88.

In 1988, then-Craftsman Gunther was enrolled at the school
as a trainee Weapons Technician (Land) MOC 421. Realizing
that his true calling was to the infantry as opposed to one
of the support trades, he applied for and was granted a
remuster to Inf 021 before his EME training was complete.

While he was waiting to be loaded onto a trainee draft at
the R22eR battle School, he was assigned to my Faculty for
general duties. We at the school were sorry to be losing
such a promising candidate, yet he made it very clear that
he wished to be in the infantry, and the school did its
best to honour his desires.

I recall that even then, as a young soldier not yet fully
trained, he displayed a remarkable degree of intelligence,
enthusiasm and maturity. In the few weeks that he worked
directly for me, I was able to rely on him to carry out all
duties in a most professional manner. During our field
training exercises, Craftsman Gunther worked long hours
and was always cheerful, positive and aggressive, some of
the best qualities that any soldier can possess.

I ran into him in Germany several times after he was posted
to 1R22eR in Lahr. He always mentioned how he would have
enjoyed serving as a weapon tech, but that the infantry was
his first love.

I was working in NDHQ in Ottawa in June of 1993 when Cpl.
Gunther was killed. I saw the photographs of his M113 APC
taken after the attack. There is no doubt in my mind that
the damage was caused by the direct impact of a projectile-
type weapon, not shrapnel.

At the time, I was - and am - deeply saddened to hear the
news of Cpl. Gunther's death. I think that this WWW page
memorial is very fitting and appropriate. Cpl. Gunther
died serving his country and the Army that he loved. His
service and conduct followed the finest traditions of both
the Royal Canadian Electrical & Mechanical Engineers and of
the Royal 22e Regiment.

He shall be remembered.

Your webpage has been in my thoughts since the last time I was here.
I have a very close friend at the moment in Yugoslavia (Former) for a third
time and my heart is in my throat while he is there. I lost a close friend who was on HMCS Regina
in 95 to what was to be a routine exercise between two Naval Ships. Last week the media released that 10 people are negligent in my friend's death.
Your webpage has brought tears to my eyes while reading it. I have taped the CBC Movie that was on called Peacekeepers as it hits home for me.
My heart goes out to you both, and the rest of your family.

Bonjour,

Fantastic webpage! The love and frustration your express are
are familiar. Hang in there! Daniel was chosen to do a necessary
and thankless job for the sake of all humanity! He will never be
appreciated as much as he should . . . sadly, most of 'humanity'
is incapable of the compassion and lacks the desire for peace your
son exhibited by his unselfish actions.

Mr. Gunther,

Please accept my sincerest sorrows for your loss. Even though my own son is only 3 years old, I can't imagine my life without him in it. How hard it must have been for you to have Daniel taken from your lives after caring for and loving him for so long.
I know that you will be him again someday, and that you will not even remember the tragedies that surrounded his death and the anguish you felt for the many years you had to go on after his passing.
He was very handsome, and I hope that his son is as good looking as he.

Again, my deepest sympathy, to you, your wife, and Daniel's family.
May God be with you always.

Mr and Mrs. Gunther. Though I have not experienced the loss
you have as the result of the death of a child, I do empathize
with you. Being the wife of a military man myself, I know
the fear involved when seeing him off on yet another mission.
Daniel was a brave man, who loved his family and his country.
Always remember that no matter what happened, he would do it
again, because of love. Love is what binds us together, here
on earth and in the eternities. May God be with you and your
family, and with Daniel's family. May you know of His pure
love for you and share it with those around you. Never forget
to let Alexandre know that his papa in heaven is watching over
him always.

Sincerely,

Suzanne
