I've never done this before, signing a memorial guestbook for someone I don't know, but I'm doing it now. Indian ways often teach the honor of giving your life for your people. Special blessings come from such courage. While our world has gotten smaller and as human beings of all walks are learning we are more alike than different your son has brought honor to himself and to his family. While the pain of losing a son, a brother, a relative, will fade, it will never go away. Your son died an honored and honorable death by giving his life for other human beings. I never knew your son, but I am extremely pleased to hear that the proper respects can be paid to a well deserving soldier. I spent 7 months in Bosnia in 1994 to 1995 and I believe I know what he felt as he was representing our country in the peacekeeping role and I'm sure he was just as proud as I was. Dear family: I found this page as I was looking at the homepage of one of the corporals of my old engeneerplatoon from Bosnia. I was the CO of ACoy Dutchbat in Simin Han (Near Tuzla) in 1995. The "bad" year. I saw a lot of good things and also a lot of bad. What I do know is that the UN forces there did all they could. And it helped! So I am sure your son did'nt die for nothing. Forget the politicians and the deskknights, keep in contact with his unit, his comrades. They will remember him too.They will still think about him, just like you. I think it is wonderful that you made this website for your beloved Daniel. I have just lost my brother Francis,in a fire in North Bay last month (Nov. 98) and this website brought tears to my eyes. We also know about politics, for his cabin was burned to the ground on Devil's night and the fire started 2 hours after he went to bed, my parents still have not received a police report--this is very hard on them. This is an excellent tribute to young Daniel. I am trying to get a private citizens campaign going, whereby another Book of Remembrance be dedicated, in the Peace Tower in Ottawa, for all the 100+ Canadian soldiers that have died "In the Service of Peace". I figure that if enough of us write our MPs, that the Canadian government might finally pay their respects to Daniel and his peers.

I first heard about the death of your son today, I came across an artical in todays Calgary Herald, honouring the Canadian Peacekeepers, who have died in Bosnia while in the service of there Country. As a former member of the Canadian Forces I send you and your family my deepest condolences.

As a young Canadian not having lived through many conflicts I've often found it hard to comprehend the pain and devestation war causes to people here. I truly appreciate the honesty of your page and people like your son; willing to give his life for others, people he will never know. Thank you for the gift of freedom he gave us, and to you, his family for raising someone who cares enough about freedom for the rest of the world. Also, thank you for finding the truth surrounding his death and making those people in power (likely the same ones who cause these conflicts) accountable. This is a beautiful page, and dedicated to a man senselessly killed while trying to help others rise beyond conflict, beyond killing. The terrible irony, the terrible tragedy of his loss should serve to keep us in touch with the incredible value of the peaceful lives that we and our loved ones enjoy every day of our lives. Iam very sorry about your son. I was in Croatia at the time your son was killed at a place called "The Medac Pocket" At the time I was a Warrant Officer with 2PPCLI. When we heard about the incident we were informed that it was not an accident, but an overt act with an RPG 18 anti tank weapon. I lost a very close friend over there a few short months later. I was on OP Harmony in croatia when your son was killed. In our morning orders the next day we were told that he was indeed killed in a deliberate attack with an RPG 80mm antitank weapon. I was myself subsequently involved in the largest land battle since the end of the Korean war at a place called Medak. This was then suppressed buy DND. The men who are in charge of the armed forces are carraerist bueruecrats. My condolences on your loss and the garbage you had to put up with subsequently . Your son served bravely for A cause he believed in and by his service prevented much death and misery.

I am a member of the Candian military. After reading Daniel's story I have been further angered by our so called "leaders". I'm glad that in your case the truth was revealed with regards to your son. While the magazine has had its conflicts with DND for almost all of that time, the true story of Daniel Gunther's murder finally showed us exactly how far we could trust the Department. Since then, we have been relying on the 'front-line' soldiers to keep us informed. I hope the truth brought some closure to his family.
