Although the facts were immediately known, and confirmed by a Board Of Inquiry held in Bosnia in July of 1993, the military Press Release stated that Daniel died from shrapnel wounds from a Mortar exploding "near" the APC. A Public Affairs Officer at Canadian Forces Base Valcartier also added that "Corporal Gunther was probably half way out of his vehicle when he was hit by the shrapnel". These statements insinuate that it may have been a stray mortar bomb that exploded near the APC, and that Daniel was imprudent and partially to blame for his fatal injuries. As late as November 1993, the Department of National Defense was not budging from its version of the incident in Bosnia as reported by Peter Worthington in November 1993 .
